SANITISATION AND DISINFECTION GUIDELINES IN CONJUCTION WITH BUSINESS OPENING AND COVID 19

Major cities and towns all over the world had shut down because of the COVID 19 pandemic. Governments and Health professionals have been working tirelessly to find a cure. It has now come clear that a vaccine is far from being ready and a cure is still theoretical until all the testing and studies have been done fully. The vaccine and cure are still work in progress as further studies on the virus are on-going, which leaves with one thing and that is prevention of the disease. Businesses have to open, employers need to book profits and employees need pay checks. Prevention is the only way for now and the best method to reduce the spread of the disease is to put face masks and improve on hand hygiene

During an outbreak it very important to reduce the spread of infection, Covid-19 has made this difficult because of how it is spreading. It is spreading through aerosols that come from a noses and mouth of a contaminated person especially when they cough. These aerosols that are coughed out by a positive person carry the covid-19 virus. When Covid-19 individual coughs into our hands, when they greet someone who has coughed in their hands or who has greeted someone who has coughed in their hands, when we touch or lean on surfaces where aerosols or air droplets have fallen .We complete this cycle when we touch our faces and breath in these aerosols.

Workplaces have very different setups but most if not all include some form of interaction, with clients, visitors, patients, customers or your colleagues.Covid-19 spreads easily during its incubation period which can be two weeks, It then becomes important to practise good breathing etiquette and hand hygiene as a preventive measure against the Covid-19 virus.

At workplaces hand sanitizers should be put on every entry and exit point. They should be clearly be visible and accessible so that anyone coming in or out, gets a chance to sanitise their hands. Trained personnel should be put in place at these points to assist in the sanitation procedure and make sure that no one skips this important step before entry or exit.

In the event that there are staff shortages clearly labelled charts should point to the point where the sanitizer is placed, Care should be taken when using the hand sanitizer not to touch it with you open hands, therefore it is wiser to have sanitizer put in bottle that can allow us to press them with our palms. Charts should clearly guide visitors and employees on how to properly rub hands with a hand sanitizer, it is advised to rub your hands with an alcohol based sanitizer for 20 – 30 seconds.

Running water should be available close by or in a nearby toilet together with liquid soap. Hands should be wet first by running water, liquid soap should then be applied and then hands should be rubbed with soap for 40 -60 seconds before being put under running water. Afterwards running water should be used to wash off the soap. However, if hands are not visibly soiled it is encouraged to just use a hand sanitizer instead. A chart showing the hand washing procedure should be on a wall very close to the sink to guide visitors and staff.

A disinfectant such as household bleach can also be used to wash hands,0.05% of (6% household bleach) should be mixed  to 1 litre of water for it to be effective in the washing of hands under running water. House hold bleach under this concentration is safe and effective for washing hands

The first order of the day upon getting in an office or on your work desk is to swab the area with a disinfectant.

Work desks in an office can spread the virus as well if aerosols drop on them. The virus will survive on wood for up to 96 hours on steel for 72hrs. A disinfectant is best used on desks and items that may be exposed, 6% household bleach is mixed with water at a ratio of 0.2% and put in a squeeze bottle and labelled. This concentration is best to kill a microorganism on the surface

Work surfaces should be cleaned with spirit or 5 % bleach using a cotton swab which is discarded after use. The disinfectants should be in a squeeze bottle that should always be handled with gloves, or hands should be washed/sanitized before and after handling the squeeze bottle.

Disinfectants’ kill any bacteria and viruses on the surface, it important to disinfect the work benches or desks at least three times a day. First thing in the morning, after lunch and at the end of the day, Hands should be washed regularly and sanitised by an alcohol based sanitizer as often as possible.

Covid-19 is deadly because it of the way it is spreading, so we should remember to wash our hands, avoid touching our faces, wearing face masks, sanitising our work desks and we can reduce the spread sharing this information and we can reduce Covid-19 from spreading.
